MUSIC IN MOTION
It’s murder on the dance floor!

T hey started by producing songs for other artists.
But now their own sizzling sounds are getting music-lovers moving!
This is the Black Motion, a two-man Afro-house group from Soshanguve, north of Tshwane.
The outfit is made up of childhood frinds Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane and Bongani Mohasana, aka DJ Murder.
Black Motion released their first four-track EP, entitled Cultural Unite, in 2009. It featured the single African Salsa. Although the disc did well in the market, it did not put the duo in the spotlight.
That changed in November last year, when they released their hit single Banane Mavoko. The video has been played extensively on local TV and radio.
The success of the single saw the group establishing a relationship with UK-based labe, Tribe Records, to use their music on the African house music website, AfrodesiaMP3.com. Local house music icon, Oscar Mdlongwa – aka DJ Oskido – followed by signing the duo to his label, Kalawa Jazzmee, in January this year.
Black Motion are now working on their debut full-length album, expected to be released any day now.
Though the title of the disc is yet to be decided, it will lead with a Shona song called Kakaramba, featuring emerging vocalist Celi Mpilo. Other tracks are written in English, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana.
Thabo told SunBuzz he was happy to see their efforts starting to pay off. He put their success down to the powers of God, hard work and dedication.
“You do not necessarily need to be an established artist to go international with your music. Most overseas record company owners prefer emerging artists from our continent, as long as the music has an African flavour,” said Thabo.
“We just want to keep music-lovers moving and dancing – so that they can always be happy!”
